Gifted and Talented (G & T) Program:

At West Ryde Public School we believe in treating all pupils as individuals and so catering for their individual needs. This includes pupils of higher ability who we refer to as ‘gifted’ and ‘talented.’

Purpose

This policy serves students who are gifted, their teachers, parents and carers.

West Ryde Public School has a responsibility to recognise and implement programs that cater for the educational needs of those students who have been identified Gifted or Talented.

It establishes our shared responsibility to ensure that these students are provided with opportunities to meet their needs and to achieve their potential.

Identification

The identification of gifted and talented students is a process in which all teaching staff have a part, but it is overseen and co-ordinated by the Principal and Co-ordinator for Gifted and Talented students in consultation with class teachers.

The process must be ongoing and cater for underachievers and those with disabilities.

The identification process includes:

  • Tests results from Basic Skills Tests, external tests, eg: NSW University Competitions and end of year assessment tasks.)
  • Parental nomination
  • Teacher assessment.
  • Underachieving and late developers are identified through the comparison and analysis of pupil achievement data.
